Kenyon 12, Ohio Wesleyan 1
Ohio Wesleyan 9, Kenyon 5
Junior first baseman Dillon Ysseldyke (Hilliard/Bradley) knocked in 3 runs and junior righthander Andy Anthony (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) tamed the league-leading Kenyon offense as the Bishops defeated the Owls in the nightcap of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday in Gambier.
In the opener, Kenyon's Theo Canning and Noah Rosenberg combined on a 3-hitter as the Owls took the win.
With the score tied at 1 in the third inning of the nightcap, sophomore outfielder Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome) plated a run to put the Bishops ahead to stay and sophomore second baseman Ryan Duckworth (Hilliard/Bradley) delivered a 2-run single later in the inning for a 4-1 Ohio Wesleyan lead. Freshman catcher Alex Snyder (Massillon/Jackson) led off the sixth with a home run to increase the lead, and Ysseldyke had a 2-run single during a 3-run seventh that stretched the margin to 8-2.
Meanwhile, Anthony was in command. Kenyon entered the day with a league-best .354 batting average, but Anthony yielded only 5 hits through the first 6.2 innings, allowing leadoff homers to Edwin Groff in the second and Drew Robinson in the sixth.
Junior outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School) and Ysseldyke each went 2-for-5, and junior second baseman Blake Farley (Hudson) launched a solo homer in the ninth.
The opener saw the Owls build a 12-0 lead, pushing across 2 runs in the fourth before getting an RBI double from Robinson during a 3-run fifth and putting the game out of reach with 7 runs in the sixth.
Padilla knocked in the Ohio Wesleyan run with a seventh-inning single. Junior righthander Jason Monos (Amherst/Steele) was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops.
