Ohio Wesleyan trailed by a goal at the half, but the Battling Bishop defense shut out Oberlin during the second half to help the Bishops to a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Saturday at Selby Stadium.

Freshman attacker Will Seigenthaler (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and sophomore midfielder Joey Wiseman (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) got the Bishops started with goals in the first quarter for an early 2-0 lead.  Following a back-and-forth scoring affair, sophomore attacker Spencer Amacher fired a goal for a 4-2 Bishop lead with 7 seconds remaining in the first.

Freshman midfielder Dennis Van Der Wal (San Anselmo, Calif./Redwood) scored an unassisted goal midway through the second quarter.  The Yeomen immediately responded, scoring 3 straight goals to close out the half, lifting them to a 6-5 lead.

In the second half, it was all Battling Bishops.  Siegenthaler picked up his second goal of the game off a beautiful feed from junior midfielder Cooper Braet (Columbus/Upper Arlington).  Wiseman and Amacher also collected their second scores of the game in the third period.

With 9:59 left in the fourth quarter, Wiseman scored his third goal of the game to collect the coveted hat trick.  Siegenthaler, Amacher, and Van Der Wal each scored twice.  Senior midfielder Jared Friesen (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Trabuco Hills) and Siegenthaler each were credited with 2 assists.  Sophomore goalkeeper Nathan George (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) saved a season-high 14 shots.

In the closing stretch of the 2023 season, the Battling Bishops are tied for second in the conference standings with 3 games left to play.
