DePauw 2, Ohio Wesleyan 1
DePauw 9, Ohio Wesleyan 1
Junior second baseman Sophia Cegledy (Pataskala/Bishop Hartley) crushed a double off the fence in left center to give Ohio Wesleyan the lead, but DePauw rallied for a pair of runs to take the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Wednesday at Margaret Sagan Field.
In the nightcap, the Tigers pushed across 3 runs in the top of the first and went on to complete the sweep.
The first game featured a pitchers' duel between DePauw's Megan Asher and Ohio Wesleyan junior lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood), with the hurlers trading zeroes through the top of the fourth before Ohio Wesleyan broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fourth on Cegledy's run-scoring double.
The Tigers answered in the top of the fifth when Emily Timberman doubled with one out and Drew Bratcher drew a 2-out walk. Alyssa Anderson followed with a single to score one run, with pinch-runner Madi Lockridge also scoring on the throw.
Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the bottom of the sixth, when junior third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark) singled with 2 out, but Tiger rightfielder Ella Ohrvall tracked down a line drive by Cegledy in right center to end the inning. Junior shortstop Rylee Anspach (Dublin/Coffman) led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to get the tying run on base, but junior centerfielder Rylie Moore (Noblesville, Ind.) lined into a double play.
Asher allowed 3 hits in working the complete game, while Chittum finished with a 5-hitter.
DePauw collected an RBI double by Katie Mathies and run-scoring singles by Timberman and Anderson in the first inning of the nightcap.
The Bishops closed to within 3-1 during an unusual third inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Back grounded to shortstop, with Tiger shortstop Riley Heim throwing home on the play. DePauw catcher Ashtyn Barnett, looking to turn an inning-ending 6-2-3 double play, pulled her foot off the plate an instant too early, with sophomore outfielder Sophia Holupka (Hillsboro, Mo.) called safe at home on the play to make it a 3-1 game. With the bases still loaded, sophomore outfielder Avery Panozzo (Denver, Colo./Mullen) was picked off second base, but after the out was called, the ball got away from Tiger second sacker Lockridge, allowing Back to move to second base and again put the tying run in scoring position. Cegledy followed with a chopper to shortstop, but Back was called out for interfering with Heim on the play for the third out.
The Tigers added to the lead with 4 runs in the sixth, capped by an RBI double by Mathies, and tacked on 2 more in the seventh with the help of Bratcher's solo homer.
Chittum was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
