Ohio Wesleyan 7, Wooster 6
Senior attacker Grace Egan (Ridgefield, Conn.) tallied 3 goals as Ohio Wesleyan built a 6-3 lead, and the Bishops held off a Wooster comeback to take a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Wednesday in Wooster.
The win clinches a spot in next week's NCAC tournament for Ohio Wesleyan, the Battling Bishops' first NCAC tournament berth since the 2010 season. Ohio Wesleyan will be the No. 3 seed in the tournament with a 4-2 record in conference play. A DePauw win over Kenyon on Saturday would result in a tie for third place between Ohio Wesleyan and DePauw at 4-2, but Ohio Wesleyan would win the tiebreaker based on its 13-6 win over DePauw on April 15.
Egan put the Bishops on the scoreboard just under 4 minutes into the game, kicking off a game-opening 3-0 run that also included scores by freshman midfielder Sam Frary (Concord, Calif./Clayton Valley Charter) and junior attacker Nicole Klabus (Delaware/Hayes). The Fighting Scots closed to within 3-2 with goals by Hannah Shaw and Kenzie Smith, but Ohio Wesleyan countered with goals from sophomore attacker Caroline Fleming (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Fayette) and Egan to restore the 3-goal margin.
Wooster opened the third-quarter scoring with an 8-meter goal by Kenzie Morris, but Egan answered with a score to give the Bishops a 6-3 lead, and after Wooster's Britta Treu and Klabus traded scores, Ohio Wesleyan held a 7-4 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Fighting Scots rallied with goals from Morris and Jill Murray to make it 7-6 with 10 minutes left in regulation time, but the Bishops protected the lead, with sophomore goalkeeper Abby Markowitz (Las Vegas, Nev./Somerset Academy) making a pair of saves during the final 10 minutes.
Egan led the Bishops with 3 goals, while Klabus added 2 scores. Markowitz finished the night with 11 saves.
