Senior shortstop D.J. Neff (Grove City) doubled home a run to give Ohio Wesleyan an early lead, but Ohio Northern broke the game open with a 7-run fifth inning and went on to a non-conference win on Thursday in Ada.
Freshman catcher Zane Vitense (Maple Grove, Minn.) led off the game with a single, and one out later, scored on Neff's double to right center.
The Polar Bears answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the first, getting an RBI single from Jacob Wenning and a sacrifice fly by Nate Webb. Corey Jeanor's solo homer made it 3-1 in the second, and a sacrifice fly by Corey McMann gave the hosts a 4-1 lead in the third.
Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 4-3 as freshman outfielder Colton Moone (South Vienna/Northeastern) scored on a Polar Bear error in the fourth and freshman second baseman Blake Pettit (Hilliard/Davidson) doubled and scored on a Vitense single in the fifth.
Ohio Northern got a 2-run single from Logan Stevens and a 2-run double by McMann during its 7-run fifth, and the Polar Bears added 5 runs in the seventh on a 2-run homer by Eric Anton and a 3-run homer by Derek Foe.
Pettit went 2-for-3 and Vitense was 2-for-4 for Ohio Wesleyan. Freshman righthander Mikey Olivieri (Jackson Township/Jackson) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
