Junior outfielder Ryan Stefancin (Cleveland/North Ridgeville) lined a bases-clearing double to highlight a 6-run eighth inning for Ohio Wesleyan, but Case Reserve held off the Bishop comeback to take a win in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday in Cleveland.
In the nightcap, junior catcher Tyler Monaco (Centerville/South Mecklenburg (N.C.)) drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Bishops an early lead, but the Spartans rallied to complete the sweep.
CWRU took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the opener with the help of a 2-run double by Jack Anderson and got a 2-run triple from Jasiah Harris during a 5-run fourth that increased the lead to 8-0.
Stefancin plated a run with an infield out to put he Bishops on the scoreboard in the fifth, but the Spartans pushed across 3 runs in the sixth and 4 more in the seventh.
Ohio Wesleyan loaded the bases in the eighth as freshman catcher Zane Vitense (Maple Grove, Minn.) walked, junior first baseman Dillon Ysseldyke (Hilliard/Bradley) was hit by a pitch, and freshman catcher Alex Snyder (Massillon/Jackson) walked. A walk to freshman second baseman Jack Bates (Westerville/South) forced in one run and sophomore third baseman Noah Brazytis (Euclid/Cleveland St. Ignatius) singled in another before Stefancin emptied the sacks with a double to left. Sophomore outfielder Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome) singled home Stefancin to bring the Bishops within 15-7. Snyder added an RBI single in the ninth for the 15-8 final.
Stefancin was 2-for-3 with 4 RBI, and Brazytis also went 2-for-3. Junior righthander Andy Anthony (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
The Bishops loaded the bases in the second inning of the nightcap as Bates, freshman second baseman Blake Pettit (Hilliard/Davidson), and Brazytis lined 2-out singles, and Monaco drew a walk to force home Bates.
The Spartans answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning, getting an RBI double by Nick Talarico and an RBI single by Owen Levinson during the inning.
Junior outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School) singled in a run to bring the Bishops within 3-2 in the third. CWRU scored twice in the fourth as Talarico contributed an RBI single, 3 times in the fifth with the help of a 2-run double by Nick Harms, and twice more in the sixth.
Padilla and Pettit each went 2-for-4. Junior righthander Jason Monos (Amherst/Steele) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
