Junior second baseman Sophia Cegledy (Pataskala/Bishop Hartley) belted a 2-run double to highlight a 7-run sixth inning that lifted Ohio Wesleyan over Hiram in the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday in Hiram.
In the nightcap, Cegledy delivered a 2-run single during a 5-run fourth inning that put the Bishops ahead to stay, and Ohio Wesleyan went on to complete the sweep.
Hiram erupted for 6 runs in the bottom of the second inning of the opener, starting off the inning with 3 straight hits and adding 3 more hits during the inning. Ohio Wesleyan narrowed the gap with 3 runs in the fourth, but the Terriers got a 2-run double from Darian Kanno in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 8-3.
With runners on second and third after a run-scoring double by junior third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark), Cegledy pulled a ball down the leftfield line to score both runners and make it an 8-6 game. Cegledy came in to score on a single by junior outfielder Rylie Moore (Noblesville, Ind.), and sophomore outfielder Alyssa Perkins (Fredericktown) and sophomore first baseman Sophie Leohner (Columbus/Upper Arlington) plated runs later in the inning to put the Bishops ahead.
Sophomore outfielder Avery Panozzo (Denver, Colo./Mullen) was 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, and junior shortstop Rylee Anspach (Dublin/Coffman) went 2-for-4. Freshman righthander Makenna Knisley (Washington Court House/Washington) was the winning pitcher in relief, recording her first collegiate victory.
The nightcap saw the Terriers build a 3-0 lead on an RBI single by Kanno and a 2-run single by Giselle Bahena.
Back singled home a run in the top of the third to make it 3-1, and Ohio Wesleyan pushed across 5 runs in the fourth. RBI singles by Moore and junior catcher Sara Bias (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic) tied the game, the Bishops took the lead on an RBI by Back, and Cegledy finished off the inning with a 2-run single.
Back, Cegledy, and Moore drove in 2 runs apiece for Ohio Wesleyan. Junior lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood) was the winning pitcher in relief, allowing only 1 run over the final 5.0 innings.
