Denison's Brooke Surbaugh slammed a go-ahead home run and tossed a 5-hit shutout to lead the Big Red past Ohio Wesleyan in Game 1 of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament on Friday in Greencastle, Ind.

Ohio Wesleyan will face the loser of the game between Hiram and DePauw in an elimination game at 5:30 p.m., while Denison advances to the winners' bracket final against the Hiram-DePauw winner at 3 p.m.

Surbaugh belted a home run off the scoreboard in leftfield with 2 down in the top of the first inning, giving the Big Red an early 1-0 lead.

Denison added to the lead in the third as Clara Wolff was hit by a pitch to open the inning and Maggie Ballentine followed with a single.  The runners moved up on a sacrifice, and Surbaugh drew a walk to load the bases.  Annabelle Calderon then grounded to junior shortstop Rylee Anspach (Dublin/Coffman), but the ball was not fielded cleanly and Wolff and Ballentine scored on the play.  Jacqui Abogado walked to refill the sacks, and Indy Workman sent a fly ball to right that was dropped by sophomore outfielder Alyssa Perkins (Fredericktown), scoring Surbaugh, with Calderon scoring on Perkins' throwing error on the play.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the seventh as Perkins singled and sophomore first baseman Sophie Leohner (Columbus/Upper Arlington) doubled, but the runners were stranded at second and third.

Leohner was 2-for-3 for Ohio Wesleyan.  Junior lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood) was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops.
