DePauw 5, Ohio Wesleyan 3
Junior outfielder Rylie Moore (Noblesville, Ind.) and sophomore first baseman Sophie Leohner (Columbus/Upper Arlington) singled to put the tying run on base in the sixth inning, but DePauw got out of the inning and went on to take the win in the resumption of Game 4 of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday in Greencastle, Ind.
With the win, DePauw advances to the losers' bracket final to face Denison, with that game currently scheduled for 11 a.m. on Sunday.
The Ohio Wesleyan-DePauw game had been halted after 5 innings because of darkness on Friday, with the Tigers holding a 5-3 lead.
When the game resumed, Moore opened the top of the sixth with a single, and one out later, Leohner followed with a single to put runners on the corners, but sophomore designated player McKenna Tuttle (Richmond, Ky./Model Laboratory School) then sent a grounder to DePauw second baseman Alyssa Anderson, who was able to tag Leohner for the second out and fire on to first to end the inning.
Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with walks to junior second baseman Sophia Cegledy (Pataskala/Bishop Hartley), junior shortstop Rylee Anspach (Dublin/Coffman), and Moore. Sophomore outfielder Alyssa Perkins (Fredericktown) greeted Tiger reliever Kersten Brayton by ripping a ball down the leftfield line, scoring Cegledy and Anspach, and Leohner followed with a single to score Moore.
DePauw rallied for 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth, opening the inning with infield singles by Kelsey Bernhard and Abby Pyburn, before Katie Mathies reached on an error by Cegledy, allowing Bernhard to score. Emily Timberman followed with a single up the middle, driving in 2 runs to tie the game, and an RBI double by Macey Cox plated the go-ahead run.
Leohner was 3-for-3 for Ohio Wesleyan. Junior lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood), who had blanked the Tigers on 4 hits through the first 4.0 innings, was charged with the loss.
Leohner represented Ohio Wesleyan on the all-tournament team.
