Ohio Wesleyan 5, Oberlin 4
Junior outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School) launched a grand slam that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and the Bishops held off an Oberlin rally to take the nightcap of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader from the Yeomen on Saturday at Littick Field.
In the opener, Oberlin took the lead with 4 runs in the seventh and withstood a Bishop rally in the ninth to hold on for the win.
The nightcap saw Oberlin starter Ty Weatherspoon and freshman righthander Parker Tomlin (Atlanta, Ga./Westerville (Ohio) Central) trade zeroes through 4 innings before the Yeomen took the lead on an RBI double by Jacob Thompson in the fifth.
Ohio Wesleyan loaded the bases in the sixth on infield singles by sophomore outfielder Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome), senior shortstop D.J. Neff (Grove City), and freshman outfielder Colton Moone (South Vienna/Northeastern) before Padilla's blast to right center emptied them and gave the Bishops a 4-1 lead.
After the teams traded runs in the seventh, the Yeomen opened the ninth with singles by Thompson and Jake Blozy and a walk to Ethan Hurwitz. A bases-loaded walk to Vince Dolcemaschio made it 5-3, and Max Anastasio followed with a liner to center that scored Blozy to bring the visitors within 5-4. Yianni Gardner followed with a grounder to first that moved the runners to second and third, putting the go-ahead run into scoring position, but junior righthander Jason Monos (Amherst/Steele) got Chris Wolfe on a called third strike to end the game.
Stoner was 2-for-3 and freshman first baseman Zane Vitense (Maple Grove, Minn.) went 2-for-4 for the Bishops. Tomlin worked the first 6.0 innings, striking out 4 and walking 2, to collect the win, and Monos pitched the final 3.0 innings to record a save.
Oberlin had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the opener as Thompson walked, moved to second on a sacrifice, moved to third on a single by Hurwitz, and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dolcemaschio.
Vitense doubled in a run in the fifth to even the game at 1, and the Bishops added a run in the sixth after walks to freshman catcher Alex Snyder (Massillon/Jackson) and Moone. Padilla followed with a grounder to first and Oberlin first baseman Anastasio fired to second to retire Moone. Yeomen shortstop Max Cairo, looking to complete the 3-6-1 double play, threw past first base, allowing Snyder to score.
The Yeomen responded with 4 runs in the seventh, with Cairo contributing a run-scoring double, Thompson following with an RBI single, and Hurwitz adding a 2-run double, and added a run in the eighth as Wolfe singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a passed ball.
The Bishops loaded the bases with 2 out in the bottom of the ninth as Vitense singled, Neff walked, and Snyder was hit by a pitch. Moone singled to center to score a pair, putting the tying run on base, and Padilla followed with a grounder that got away from Oberlin second baseman Dolcemaschio, refilling the sacks. Freshman second baseman Jack Bates (Westerville/South) then sent a high chopper to the right side, but Anastasio's toss to pitcher Alexander Norris was in time to retire Bates.
Moone was 3-for-4 for Ohio Wesleyan, while Vitense and Stoner each were 2-for-5. Junior righthander Andy Anthony (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
