Seven Bishops scored in the Ohio Wesleyan field hockey team's 8-0 win over the Oberlin Yeowomen on Sunday at Selby Stadium. Senior forward Colleen McMenamin (Chester, N.J./West Morris Regional) scored the game-winning goal 3 minutes into the match.
McMenamin drew the goal keeper out of the box, shooting the ball into the back of the net to give the Bishops an advantage which they never lost. Senior midfielder Zoe Nelson (Frederick, Md./Urbana) added a second 2 minutes later, taking a shot from the middle which found its way inside the right post.
Four minutes later, sophomore forward Mattison Hyland (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) added the Bishops' third goal after collecting a ball from freshman forward Mary Powers (Centreville, Va.).
The Bishops continued to press for the next 20 minutes but could not find the back of the net until freshman Emma Reynolds (Delaware/Columbus Bishop Watterson) gathered a loose ball, shooting it from the top of the circle to make it 4-0.
Before halftime, freshman forward Maddie Federico (Ashburn, Va./Independence) scored off a rebound from the goalkeeper to give the Bishops a 5-0 advantage.
After earning a corner in the third quarter, sophomore forward Brogan Helig (Monroeville, N.J./Saint Joseph Academy) settled a pass from junior midfielder Quinn Dachisen (Byram, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional), tucking it right into the left post.
The last two goals came off of corners with sophomore forward Gia Myers (Delaware/Olentangy Berlin) and Heilig each adding one to make the score 8-0 as the clock ran down.
The Bishops outshot the Yeowomen, 34-0, not allowing the visitors to get within the circle at any point in the match. Ohio Wesleyan also outearned on penalty corners, 16-0.
Reynolds, Federico, and Myers scored their first collegiate goals in the win.
McMenamin led with 5 shots while Helig and Myers followed with 4 apiece. All three goalkeepers for the Bishops saw action between the posts. Senior Meg McCarthy (Trumbull, Conn.) earned the start while senior Brynn Schlesinger (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) and sophomore Payton Mindel (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual) rotated in.
