by Michaela Alfano '25
Freshman forward Mary Powers (Centreville, Va./Chantilly) scored the comeback goal for Ohio Wesleyan in the second period, but DePauw was able to notch 2 more in the third to take down Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday at Selby Stadium.
The loss snapped Ohio Wesleyan's school-record winning streak in NCAC contests at 24. The Bishops' last loss in a conference game was on Oct. 1, 2022, when DePauw won a shootout after a scoreless tie. The setback also was the Bishops' first conference loss at home since a 2-0 loss to Denison on Oct. 17, 2019, ending a streak of 16 straight wins.
DePauw was able to take a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute. After a turnover in the Bishops' defensive end, Lilly Harris sent a shot in that was redirected into the cage by Tiala Ortega.
Two minutes later, Powers took a corner, sending it to senior midfielder Zoë Nelson (Frederick, Md./Urbana). Nelson played it off to junior midfielder Avery Slucher (Louisville, Ky. Christian Academy of Louisville), who sent the ball into the stick of Powers. Powers tipped in the ball to tie things up for the Bishops.
In the second half, DePauw scored back-to-back goals to give them the lead, and ultimately the win. Morris scored her second off of a penalty corner to give them a 2-0 advantage. DePauw's Alexandra May added their third after collecting a deflection from Maggie Volpe. May flicked the ball into the air, arching over the defender and into the back of the goal.
The Bishops outshot DePauw, 12-9, and earned more corners, 9-2. Powers led the Bishops in shots with 4. Senior goalkeeper Meg McCarthy (Trumbull, Conn.) made 2 saves in the posts through the first 3 periods before senior goalkeeper Brynn Schlesinger (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) subbed in for the fourth.
