Ohio Wesleyan 3, Wittenberg 0
by Michaela Alfano '25
Three different Bishops scored in the Ohio Wesleyan field hockey team's 3-0 win over Wittenberg on Wednesday at Selby Stadium. Sophomore forward Mattison Hyland (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) scored the game-winner less than a minute into the match to start the scoring efforts.
The win moved Ohio Wesleyan into a tie with Denison for first place in the NCAC at 8-1. Wittenberg has completed its conference schedule with an 8-2 record and DePauw is in fourth place at 7-2. The conference championship will be up for grabs on Saturday, with Ohio Wesleyan visiting Wooster, Denison hosting Washington & Jefferson, and DePauw hosting Transylvania. An Ohio Wesleyan win would give the Bishops at least a share of the NCAC title. Depending on the combination of outcomes in Saturday's contests, there could be as many as 4 conference co-champions crowned.
The win also marked the 100th career win for Bishop head coach Brenda Semit. Semit has coached the Bishops to a 100-63 record in 9 seasons, including a 47-8 mark during the last 3 seasons. Semit is only the second Ohio Wesleyan field hockey coach to reach the 100-win mark, joining the legendary Harriet Stewart.
Hyland scored 48 seconds into the contest with a tip-in shot in front of the goal after receiving a pass from freshman forward Mary Powers (Centreville, Va./Chantilly), who received the ball in the middle of the circle.
Powers added the Bishops' second goal, assisted by Hyland, shooting the ball right past the keeper into the right side of the goal.
Senior forward Colleen McMenamin (Chester, N.J./West Morris Regional) scored the final goal of the night for the Bishops. Powers sent in a shot which McMenamin redirected into the left post of the goal for a 3-0 advantage.
The Bishops outshot the Tigers, 21-2, with Powers and Hyland leading the charge with 4 shots each. Senior goalkeeper Meg McCarthy (Trumbull, Conn.) started in between the posts, playing the first 45 minutes before senior goalkeeper Brynn Schlesinger (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) took over for the final 15.
