Freshman forward Mary Powers (Centreville, Va./Chantilly) scored to wipe out a 1-0 deficit, but ninth-ranked Cortland got the game-winner during the closing minutes of regulation time to take a win over Ohio Wesleyan in a first-round contest of the NCAA Division III tournament on Wednesday in Cortland, N.Y.

Cortland had the first scoring opportunity of the game, getting a shot from Hanna Corrigan that senior goalkeeper Meg McCarthy (Trumbull, Conn.) turned away, with the Red Dragons earning a penalty corner on the play.  After the corner, Gianna Trunfio had a look for Cortland, but senior defender Gabi Dahllof (Bear, Del./Caravel Academy) was there to make the stop.

Early in the second quarter, the Red Dragons earned a penalty corner, and McCarthy denied shots by Keirra Ettere and Jamie Snyder before a third-chance shot by Trunfio made it over the line to give Cortland the lead.

Freshman forward Reagan Shifflett (Henrico, Va./Godwin) had a chance to tie the game midway through the period, but Cortland's Emma Morgan made the save, and the first half would end with the Red Dragons holding a 1-0 lead.

Powers launched a rocket from just inside the circle that found the right side of the Red Dragon cage with 1:32 remaining in the third quarter, evening the score at 1.

McCarthy made a pair of saves during the early minutes of the fourth period, but Cortland earned back-to-back penalty corners in the 57th minute, and after the second corner, McCarthy stopped a shot by Corrigan, but Etterre was there to score on the rebound, giving the Red Dragons the lead with 3:01 left in regulation time.

Cortland outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 26-7.  McCarthy finished with 12 saves in the Bishop cage.
