Schipfer Helps 10th/12th-Ranked Bishops Hurdle Huskies

Fifth-year guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) scored 13 points during a 22-0 run that put 10th/12th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay in a win over Southern Maine in the Puerto Rico Clasico tournament on Friday in Caguas, Puerto Rico.

The Huskies led for most of the first quarter, but Ohio Wesleyan scored the final 9 points of the period, getting a pair of free throws and 2 hoops by Schipfer and a 3-pointer from junior guard Mia Guscoff (Canton/Massillon Perry) to even the score at 15 to close out the quarter.

each contributed a pair of hoops to open the second period before Schipfer converted a 3-point play midway through the period.  Fifth-year point guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) followed with a lay-in to close out the Bishop run and give Ohio Wesleyan a 28-15 lead with 3:29 left in the half.

Lita Guslens had a lay-in and a tip-in to help the Huskies close to within 28-21, and Southern Maine was within 30-24 after Vanessa Vaughan opened the second half with a 3-pointer.

Ohio Wesleyan pulled away late in the third quarter as Schipfer had a lay-in and a pair of free throws and Homan sank a pair of free throws to put the Bishops ahead by a dozen heading into the fourth quarter, and the lead would remain in double figures for the remainder of the contest.

Schipfer led the Bishops with 23 points and 10 rebounds.  Miller scored 11 points and dished out a career-high 7 assists.  Homan finished with 10 points.
