Ohio Wesleyan 63, Ohio Northern 38

Senior post Karlee Ross (Beverly/Fort Frye) had 6 points during an early 14-1 run and fifth-year guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) scored 6 points in a span of 40 seconds early in the second quarter, and 10th/12th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan pulled away during the second half to defeat Ohio Northern in the Bishop Classic/"Hoops for Hope" tournament on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Abi Akamine gave the Polar Bears the lead with a basket on the opening possession of the game, but Ross answered with a pair of hoops to kick off the 14-1 run and put the Bishops ahead to stay.  Buckets by fifth-year point guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson), Schipfer, and sophomore post Macy Miller (Marysville/Milford Center Fairbanks) followed before a Ross basket and a pair of free throws by Schipfer made it 14-3 with 1:58 left in the first quarter.

The Bishops led, 16-7, after the first period and Schipfer scored 3 straight baskets off ONU turnovers in a span of 40 seconds to extend the lead to 22-7 with 8:18 remaining in the second quarter.

Ohio Wesleyan would not score during the remainder of the half, but the Bishop defense yielded only 8 points during that stretch for a 22-15 lead at the intermission, and the visitors closed to within 22-19 when Brooke Allen and Akamine opened the second half with buckets.

Homan knocked down a 3-pointer to end the Bishops' scoring drought of more than 10 minutes, and Schipfer followed with a pair of free throws before a trifecta from fifth-year guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) pushed the lead back into double figures midway through the third quarter.  Abby Dickson scored for Ohio Northern to end that 8-0 Bishop run, but Miller answered with a jumper from the lane and Ross added a jumper before a 3-pointer from junior guard Mia Guscoff (Canton/Massillon Perry)
closed out a 7-0 burst that made it 37-21, and the Ohio Wesleyan lead would remain in double digits throughout the remainder of the contest.

Schipfer led the Bishops with 18 points.  Schipfer went 4-for-4 from the free throw line, with the 4 free throws made raising her career total to 465, breaking the Ohio Wesleyan mark of 463 set by Jessica Viertlboeck from 1997-2001.

Homan finished with a season-high 13 points and led Ohio Wesleyan with 7 assists.  Ross added 10 points.  Miller collected a team-leading 11 boards.

Homan was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after setting a tournament single-game record with 12 assists on Monday and finishing with 19 assists during the tournament, surpassing the mark of 16 set by Brittney Wilson of Franklin during the 2009-10 season.  Homan was joined on the all-tournament team by Schipfer and Miller of Ohio Wesleyan, Akimine and Kristen Luersman of Ohio Northern, and Ariana Williams of Principia.
