Ohio Wesleyan 13, Earlham 8
Kean 9, Ohio Wesleyan 3
Senior third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark) drove in a run to spark a 4-run sixth inning that broke the game open and went on to tie a school record as Ohio Wesleyan opened its spring trip with a win over Earlham on Tuesday in Leesburg, Fla.
In Tuesday's second game, senior second baseman Sophia Cegledy (Pataskala/Bishop Hartley) drove in a run to even the score at 1 in the top of the third, but Kean answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning and went on to the win.
Ohio Wesleyan scored in every inning against Earlham, starting in the first as Back led off with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a single by junior outfielder Avery Panozzo (Denver, Colo./Mullen), and scored on a Cegledy single before senior shortstop Rylee Anspach (Dublin/Coffman) plated a run later in the inning. Junior first baseman Sophie Leohner (Columbus/Upper Arlington) and senior catcher Sara Bias (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic) drove in runs in the third, and Leohner and freshman outfielder Jessie Spurling (Lancaster) knocked in runs in the fourth.
The Bishops led, 9-4, heading into the top of the sixth, but the Quakers assembled 5 hits to close to within 9-8.
In the bottom of the sixth, Back lined a bases-loaded single to make it 10-8, and an RBI single by freshman outfielder Chameron Vanden Eynden (Goshen) and a sacrifice fly by Cegledy helped the Bishops extend the lead to 13-8.
Back was 2-for-3 and scored 4 times. The 4 runs scored tied the school record accomplished 8 times previously, most recently by Amanda Boyle at Mount Union on March 20, 2016.
Junior righthander Kaelyn Rodriguez (South El Monte, Calif.) pitched the first 5-plus innings, striking out 5 and walking 2, to record the win, and sophomore righthander Makenna Knisley (Washington Court House/Washington) worked the final 2.0 innings to collect a save.
Against Kean, the Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the first on Karly Messina's RBI single, but Ohio Wesleyan evened the game on Cegledy's bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the third.
Kean struck for 3 runs in the bottom of the third, with Messina plating a run on a fielder's choice and scoring on a triple by Maya Thompson.
Back walked with the bases loaded to force in a run during Ohio Wesleyan's 2-run fourth, but the Cougars scored 5 times in the fifth, stringing together 6 hits during the inning, to pull away.
Senior lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
