Senior lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood) fired a 1-hitter and senior second baseman Sophia Cegledy (Pataskala/Bishop Hartley) knocked in the winning run as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Mitchell in non-conference play on Thursday in Clermont, Fla.

In Thursday's second game, senior third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark) tied a pair of school records in a win over Rutgers-Newark.

The Bishops took the lead in the third inning against Mitchell when senior catcher Sara Bias (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic) led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice by Back, took third on a fielder's choice by junior outfielder Avery Panozzo (Denver, Colo./Mullen), and came in to score on a fielder's choice off the bat of Cegledy.

Meanwhile, Chittum held the Mariners hitless until the fifth inning, when Jenna Bennett reached on an infield single.  Bennett moved to second on a sacrifice, putting the tying run in scoring position, but was stranded there.

Ohio Wesleyan added an insurance run in the seventh when freshman outfielder Chameron Vanden Eynden (Goshen) reached on an error, moved to second on a passed ball, stole third, and scored on an infield out.

Vanden Eynden was 3-for-4 for the Bishops.  Chittum struck out 5 and walked 2 in pitching the complete game.  The 1-hitter was the first for the Bishops since Kendall Kaiser one-hit Minnesota-Morris on March 14, 2020.

Against Rutgers-Newark, Back opened the game with a triple and scored on a single by Vanden Eynden, and Cegledy and junior first baseman Sophie Leohner (Columbus/Upper Arlington) also drove in runs as the Bishops took a 4-0 lead.

Back led off the second with a double, stole third, and scored on a fielder's choice by Vanden Eynden, and senior outfielder Rylie Moore (Noblesville, Ind.) had a 2-run single later in a 4-run inning.  Back tripled in a run in the fourth, and freshman outfielder Rylea Gist (Delaware/Hayes) and Leohner had 2-run singles during Ohio Wesleyan's 5-run fifth frame.

Back was 4-for-5 with 2 triples and 2 doubles in the contest, with the 4 hits and 10 total bases tying school records.  It was the second time this season that Back tied the single-game record for hits in a game.  The 10 total bases mark was set by Amy Mazur at Alma on March 25, 2006.

Sophomore righthander Makenna Knisley (Washington Court House/Washington) pitched the complete game, striking out 2 and walking one.
