Fifth-year shortstop D.J. Neff (Grove City) knocked in the tying run and scored the go-ahead run and Ohio Wesleyan went on to a win over Mount St. Joseph in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday in Cincinnati.
In the nightcap, Neff drove in a run to bring the Bishops within 2-1, but the Lions held on to salvage a split.
Junior second baseman Ryan Duckworth (Hilliard/Bradley) crushed a solo homer to stake the Bishops to a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the opener, but MSJ took the lead when Jake Lawson scored on a passed ball and Ethan Mason came home on an infield single by Kevin Schaaf.
The Bishops took the lead in the fifth as junior outfielder Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome) led off with a double and scored on a one-out single by Neff. After taking second on a balk and third on a wild pitch, Neff came in to score on another wild pitch.
Stoner singled, stole second, and scored on an error to add an insurance run in the eighth.
Sophomore righthander Parker Tomlin (Atlanta, Ga./Westerville (Ohio) Central) worked the first 5.0 innings, striking out 4 and walking 3, to record the win, and junior righthander Joe Liss (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) blanked the Lions on 4 hits over the final 4.0 innings to record a save.
The nightcap saw the Lions take a 2-0 lead as Brennan Martin singled in a run and Mason scored on a double play.
Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the eighth, with Stoner drawing a one-out walk, moving to second on a wild pitch, moving to third on an infield out, and scoring on Neff's single. Senior first baseman Dillon Ysseldyke (Hilliard/Bradley) followed with a single to move the tying run into scoring position, but the Lions got out of the inning without any further damage.
Senior righthander Andy Anthony (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
