Senior attacker Nicole Klabus (Delaware/Hayes) rang up 3 goals during the first quarter as Ohio Wesleyan raced to a 5-1 lead, then added 2 more scores during the fourth quarter to slam the door on an Otterbein rally as the Bishops took a non-conference win over the Cardinals on Wednesday in Westerville.
Junior attacker Casey Conklin (Marcellus, N.Y.) scored in the first minute of the game and senior midfielder Sophia DelGallo (Braintree, Mass.) added a goal shortly thereafter, but Otterbein's Alyssa Glenn put the Cardinals on the scoreboard with a goal at the 9:11 mark.
Klabus answered with a goal less than a minute later, and during the final minute of the period, added goals with :30 to play and with :03 remaining to extend the Bishop lead to 5-1.
Conklin tallied 3 goals during the second quarter, including a pair during the final minute of play, as Ohio Wesleyan took a 9-4 lead at the half. Conklin then set up sophomore midfielder Tiffany Trinh (Dublin/Scioto) to open the second-half scoring and make it 10-4, and DelGallo scored back-to-back goals late in the third quarter for a 12-7 Ohio Wesleyan lead heading into the fourth period.
Otterbein got a goal from Gillian Roeder and 2 goals by Glenn to pull within 12-10 midway through the fourth quarter, but Klabus ended the Cardinals' 3-0 run with a goal with 6:18 to play before junior attacker Caroline Fleming (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Fayette) and Klabus scored goals :26 apart to stretch the margin to 15-10 with 2:08 left in the game.
Klabus led the Bishops with 5 goals. Conklin finished with 4 goals and an assist, DelGallo added 3 goals, and Trinh had a goal and 3 assists. Junior Abby Markowitz (Las Vegas, Nev./Somerset Academy) made 3 saves during the first 37-plus minutes and freshman Grace Lilly (Granville) had 5 saves during the final 22-plus minutes.
