Ohio Wesleyan 10, Olivet 6
Ohio Wesleyan 8, Olivet 2
Fifth-year shortstop D.J. Neff (Grove City) launched run-scoring doubles in the first and third innings to help Ohio Wesleyan build a 9-0 lead, and the Bishops went on to a win over Olivet in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday at Littick Field.
In the nightcap, junior outfielder Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome) singled in the go-ahead run in the sixth and the Bishops pulled away with 5 runs in the eighth to complete the doubleheader sweep.
The Bishops struck for 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning of the opener as Stoner led off with an infield single, stole second, and scored on a double by Neff. Senior first baseman Dillon Ysseldyke (Hilliard/Bradley) doubled home Neff, and after a wild pitch and a walk to sophomore first baseman Zane Vitense (Maple Grove, Minn.) put runners on the corners, Vitense took off for second on a ball in the dirt and stayed in a rundown long enough to allow Ysseldyke to score.
Stoner led off the Bishop third with a walk, and a Neff single put runners on the corners before a Stoner scored on the front end of a double steal to make it 4-0. Ysseldyke singled home Neff and moved to second when Comet rightfielder Mason Cook misplayed the ball, then came in to score on a single by senior outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School).
Neff's 2-run double in the fourth made it 8-0, and sophomore outfielder Matt Spencer (Hilliard/Darby) singled in Neff for the 9-0 advantage.
Olivet rallied in the fifth, stringing together 5 hits and taking advantage of a Bishop error to pull within 9-5, and Braden Abbott singled in a run in the eighth to make it 9-6, but that was as close as the visitors would come.
Neff was 4-for-5 with 4 RBI, Ysseldyke went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, and Stoner was 1-for-2 with 4 runs scored. Senior righthander Jason Monos (Amherst/Steele) was the winning pitcher in relief.
Stoner led off the first inning of the nightcap with a walk and Neff reached base when Comet second baseman Jack Friesen dropped a fly ball in short right field. After the runners moved up on a sacrifice, junior second baseman Ryan Duckworth (Hilliard/Bradley) drove in Stoner with a sacrifice fly.
Olivet evened the score in the fourth with an RBI single by Blake Hawkins, but the Bishops responded in the bottom of the inning as Padilla singled, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice, and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore catcher Carson Fox (Van Wert/Lincolnview).
The Comets tied the game in the fifth on Friesen's run-scoring double.
Ohio Wesleyan took the lead in the sixth when senior outfielder Ryan Stefancin (Cleveland/North Ridgeville) walked, moved to second on a sacrifice, took third on an infield out, and scored on Stoner's single.
The Bishops pulled away in the eighth with 3 hits and 3 walks, with Duckworth delivering an RBI single and Neff and Vitense drawing bases-loaded walks.
Stoner was 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored. Freshman lefthander Robert Martin (South Webster) worked the first 6.0 innings, scattering 5 hits and striking out 5 while walking 3, to record the win.
