Ohio Wesleyan 10, Heidelberg 9
Senior first baseman Dillon Ysseldyke (Hilliard/Bradley) crushed a 2-run homer to break an 8-8 tie and lift Ohio Wesleyan to a non-conference win over Heidelberg on Wednesday at Littick Field.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, fifth-year shortstop D.J. Neff (Grove City) was hit by a pitch, and one out later, Ysseldyke launched a shot over the fence in centerfield to give Ohio Wesleyan a 10-8 lead.
The Student Princes rallied in the ninth inning as Andrew Cook led off with a single, Reece McNelly drew a one-out walk, and Garrett LaBeau followed with a walk to fill the sacks. Sophomore righthander Zane Vitense (Maple Grove, Minn.) came on in relief and retired Braedy Limke on a fly ball to deep center, with all 3 runners tagging up and advancing, putting the go-ahead run in scoring position, but Vitense retired Aidan Corrigan on a foul ball down the rightfield line to end the game.
Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Neff belted a solo homer to center and senior outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School) added an RBI single later in the inning. The Bishops tacked on 5 runs in the second, with sophomore outfielder Matt Spencer delivering a 2-run single and Ysseldyke pulling a 2-run double down the rightfield line during the frame.
Heidelberg came back with a pair of unusual innings, loading the bases in the third on 2 hit batsmen and an error before Camden Farley drove a ball down the leftfield line and just inside the foul pole to make it 7-4. The Student Princes took the lead in similar fashion in the sixth, loading the bases on 2 walks and a hit batsman before Adam McVicker hit a long homer to right center, giving the visitors an 8-7 lead.
The Bishops evened the game in the bottom of the sixth as Neff led off with a single, took second on a sacrifice, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored when Heidelberg catcher Thomas Sauer threw wildly to third base on the play.
Ysseldyke was 3-for-4 with 4 RBI, while Neff went 2-for-3 with 4 runs scored. Sophomore righthander Mikey Olivieri (Jackson Township/Jackson) was the winning pitcher in relief, and Vitense got the final 2 outs for his first save of the season.
