Ohio Wesleyan 5, Berea 4
Fifth-year shortstop D.J. Neff (Grove City) launched an RBI double to cap a 2-run seventh inning that lifted Ohio Wesleyan to a non-conference win over Berea in the Bishops' home opener on Thursday at Littick Field.
The Mountaineers had broken a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh when Fredison Rivera was hit by a pitch to open the frame and A.J. Wylie followed with a single to left. After the runners moved up on a wild pitch, Michael Vazquez popped up for the first out, but Jayden Junta greeted sophomore righthander Mikey Olivieri (Jackson Township/Jackson) with a grounder to the right side that plated Rivera with the go-ahead run.
With one out in the bottom of the inning, freshman third baseman Luke Johnson (Cincinnati/Batavia West Clermont) singled and junior outfielder Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome) beat out a bunt single, with the runners moving up when Berea pitcher Derek Hay threw wildly on the play. Johnson then scored on a passed ball, with Stoner moving to third, and Stoner came home on Neff's double to center.
The Bishops had taken a 3-0 lead in the second, with sophomore catcher Alex Snyder (Massillon/Jackson) providing a run-scoring double and Johnson adding a sacrifice fly during the inning.
Berea answered with a 2-run homer to center by Junta in the third, then evened the game on Alejandro Avila's RBI single in the fourth.
Stoner was 3-for-4 with 2 doubles, while senior outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School) went 2-for-3 and Snyder was 2-for-4. Olivieri, who worked 2.2 hitless innings to close out the game, was credited with the win.
