Junior outfielder Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome) scored the go-ahead run during a 2-run seventh inning that broke a 5-5 tie and lifted Ohio Wesleyan to a win over Wooster in the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday at Littick Field.

In the nightcap, Stoner had an RBI single and scored the go-ahead run during a 6-run third inning that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 9-8 lead, and the Bishops went on to complete the sweep.

It was Ohio Wesleyan's first doubleheader sweep of Wooster since May 4, 2008, when the Bishops swept the Fighting Scots by scores of 6-3 and 14-6 to win an NCAC tournament semifinal series, and Ohio Wesleyan's first doubleheader sweep of Wooster at Littick Field since April 26, 1996, when the Bishops won by scores of 2-0 and 2-1.

Wooster built a 5-0 lead in the opener, collecting an RBI single by Zack Barienbrock in the first, an RBI single by Eli Westrick during a 2-run second, an RBI single by Andrew McGowan in the third, and a run-scoring triple by Leo Widtmann in the sixth.

The Bishops stormed back to even the score in the bottom of the sixth as fifth-year shortstop D.J. Neff (Grove City) and Stoner opened the inning with singles.  After a double steal, Neff continued home on a throwing error by Scot catcher Nathaniel Huxtable, and senior outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School) followed with a single to score Stoner.  Walks to sophomore first baseman Zane Vitense (Maple Grove, Minn.) and senior catcher Tyler Monaco (Centerville/South Mecklenburg (N.C.)) filled the sacks, and senior first baseman Dillon Ysseldyke (Hilliard/Bradley) singled home Padilla before sophomore second baseman Jack Bates (Westerville/South) tied the game with a single that scored Vitense and Monaco.

Ohio Wesleyan took the lead in the seventh.  Stoner drew a one-out walk, and junior second baseman Ryan Duckworth (Hilliard/Bradley) drove a ball to right center that eluded Wooster centerfielder John Panstares' attempt at a diving catch.  Panstares' throw to third skipped past the bag, allowing Stoner to score, and Duckworth came in to score on a single by Padilla.

Monaco went 2-for-3, Padilla was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, and Neff was 2-for-5.  Senior righthander Andy Anthony worked the first 7.0 innings to record the win, and senior righthander Jason Monos (Amherst/Steele) pitched a hitless eighth and ninth to collect a save.

Each team scored during the first 3 innings of the nightcap.  Wooster took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first with the help of an RBI ground out off the bat of Andrew McGowan and a bases-loaded walk by Huxtable, added a sacrifice fly by Nick Pett in the second, and got a solo homer from Panstares and a 2-run double by Ryan Kramer during a 4-run third.

Neff smashed a solo homer and Vitense singled in a run in the Bishop first and Stoner had an RBI single in the second before 6 Ohio Wesleyan runs in the third put the hosts ahead to stay.  After opening the third inning with walks to Ysseldyke and Padilla, Vitense doubled home a run and freshman third baseman Michael Malone (Carroll/Bloom-Carroll) and Bates plated runs with infield grounders.  Stoner delivered an RBI single to score Malone, Neff doubled in Bates, and sophomore outfielder Matt Spencer (Hilliard/Darby) plated Stoner to give the Bishops a 9-8 lead.

Ohio Wesleyan added 4 runs in the seventh, capped by Monaco's 2-run single, and scored a run in the eighth on Neff's shot back to the mound that caromed off Wooster pitcher Ben Tarpey and went for a 1-3-1 putout, with Bates scoring on the play.

Neff and Vitense each went 3-for-5, while Stoner was 2-for-4 and Ysseldyke was 2-for-2 with 2 walks.  Senior righthander Alex Casper (Green) was the winning pitcher in relief, recording his first collegiate victory.  Sophomore righthander Mikey Olivieri (Jackson Township/Jackson) blanked the Fighting Scots on 2 hits over the final 4.0 innings to record a save.
