Ohio Wesleyan 9, Capital 3
Ohio Wesleyan 14, Capital 7
Senior outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School) knocked in the go-ahead run and Ohio Wesleyan went on to defeat Capital in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday at Huntington Park in Columbus.
In the nightcap, Padilla and junior second baseman Ryan Duckworth (Hilliard/Bradley) launched bases-loaded doubles during a 9-run second inning that started the Bishops on their way to completing the sweep.
Ohio Wesleyan took an early lead in the opener as first-inning singles by fifth-year shortstop D.J. Neff (Grove City), Padilla, and sophomore first baseman Zane Vitense (Maple Grove, Minn.) resulted in a run, and a walk to Neff, a double by Padilla, and a sacrifice fly from Vitense in the third inning made it 2-0.
Capital evened the game at 2 in the bottom of the inning as Arnulfo Gonzalez and Michael Andryszczyk plated runs.
Junior outfielder Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome) doubled to lead off the top of the fifth and scored on Padilla's double to put the Bishops ahead to stay. Senior catcher Tyler Monaco (Centerville/South Mecklenburg (N.C.)) drove in a run in the sixth, and the Bishops scored 5 runs in the top of the seventh, with Neff delivering an RBI double, Monaco drawing a bases-loaded walk, and freshman third baseman Luke Johnson (Cincinnati/Batavia West Clermont) closing out the inning with a 2-run single.
Padilla was 3-for-4, while Neff went 2-for-3 with 3 runs scored. Senior righthander Andy Anthony (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) worked the first 6-plus innings, scattering 4 hits and striking out 7 while walking 3, to record the win.
The Bishops erupted for 9 runs in the second inning of the nightcap, getting a 2-run double by Monaco and bases-filled doubles from Padilla and Duckworth during the inning. Vitense singled in a run during a 2-run third that increased the lead to 11-0.
The Comets rallied with 6 runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by Ben Stevens' 2-run single, but Ohio Wesleyan got those runs back on Monaco's sacrifice fly in the fourth and Duckworth's run-scoring triple in the fifth. Sophomore outfielder Colton Moone (South Vienna/Northeastern) singled home Duckworth for a 14-6 Bishop lead.
Duckworth was 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI, Padilla went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI, and Monaco was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI. Senior righthander Josh Ferreira (Raynham, Mass./Portsmouth Abbey (R.I.)) was the winning pitcher in relief.
