Sophomore first baseman Zane Vitense (Maple Grove, Minn.) scored to tie the game at 5, but Wabash got the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth and held on for a win in the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday in Crawfordsville, Ind.
In the nightcap, junior second baseman Ryan Duckworth (Hilliard/Bradley) gave the Bishops a 3-2 lead with a 2-run single, but the Little Giants went on to complete the sweep.
Duckworth had a 2-run single as the Bishops jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the opener, but Wabash answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning, getting RBI singles from Nick Logan, Benjamin Henke, and Michael Galanos, and the hosts made it 5-3 in the second on a sacrifice fly by A.J. Reid.
Ohio Wesleyan tied the game in the third as Duckworth led off with a walk and Vitense followed with a single. After the runners moved up on a sacrifice, senior catcher Tyler Monaco (Centerville/South Mecklenburg (N.C.)) singled home Duckworth, and Vitense scored the equalizer on a wild pitch.
Wabash took the lead in the fourth as Camden Scheidt drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by Kamden Earley.
The Bishops had runners on second and third with one out in the fourth, got their leadoff batter on in the fifth and sixth, and got the tying run into scoring position in the seventh and ninth, but all were stranded.
Senior outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School) went 2-for-4 for Ohio Wesleyan. Freshman righthander Jacob Lowery (Lyndhurst/Gilmour Academy) was the losing pitcher in relief.
In the nightcap, senior first baseman Dillon Ysseldyke (Hilliard/Bradley) drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Bishops ahead in the top of the first, but Logan and Will Fremion plated runs in the bottom of the inning.
Duckworth's 2-run single gave Ohio Wesleyan a 3-2 edge in the top of the second, but Wabash got the runs back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI triple by Scheidt and a run-scoring double by Reid.
The Little Giants went on to score 5 times in the fourth frame, stringing together 5 hits, added 3 runs in the fifth with the help of 5 hits, and tacked on 6 runs in the sixth.
Padilla was 2-for-4 for the Bishops. Senior righthander Andy Anthony (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
