Ohio Wesleyan 15, Kenyon 14
Junior attacker Caroline Fleming (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Fayette) scored the game-winning goal with :37 left in the first overtime period to lift Ohio Wesleyan over Kenyon in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Friday night at Selby Stadium.
With the Bishops holding the advantage after a Kenyon green card, sophomore midfielder Tiffany Trinh (Dublin/Scioto) found Fleming alone on the right side, and Fleming whistled a shot past Owl keeper Nola Garand and into the goal for the game-winner. The win was Ohio Wesleyan's first over Kenyon since 2009, snapping a 13-game losing streak in the series.
Ohio Wesleyan trailed, 14-11, heading into the fourth quarter, but Trinh converted a free-position shot at the 8:54 mark and senior attacker Nicole Klabus (Delaware/Hayes) followed with an 8-meter goal midway through the quarter. The Bishops tied the game when Trinh set up junior attacker Casey Conklin (Marcellus, N.Y.) for a goal with 4:52 left in regulation time.
The Bishops had a pair of chances to take the lead, but Garand made stops on shots by senior midfielder Sophia DelGallo (Braintree, Mass.) and Klabus to preserve the tie. Kenyon's Blythe Karras had a chance in the closing minutes, but junior goalkeeper Abby Markowitz (Las Vegas, Nev./Somerset Academy) recorded the save. Ohio Wesleyan cleared the ball and had the final possession of regulation time, but the Bishops were unable to get off a shot.
Conklin had evened the game at 3 with a goal just 9 seconds into the second quarter, but Kenyon scored 6 straight goals, including a pair by Ali Hatfield, to close out the first half, and another Hatfield goal in the opening seconds of the third quarter gave the visitors a 10-3 lead.
Ohio Wesleyan stormed back as DelGallo and Conklin scored 2 goals apiece to make it an 11-9 game, then back-to-back goals from DelGallo pulled the Bishops even at 11 with 5:24 left in the third period. Kenyon countered with scores from Karras, Kate Lengel, and Lily Mason to take the 14-11 lead into the fourth period, only to see the Bishops hold the Owls off the scoreboard for the final 20-plus minutes of the game.
Conklin had a team-high 5 goals, while DelGallo finished with 4 goals and 2 assists and Trinh totaled 2 goals and 4 assists. Markowitz stopped 12 shots in the Ohio Wesleyan crease.
