Junior second baseman Ryan Duckworth (Hilliard/Bradley), senior outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School), and fifth-year shortstop D.J. Neff (Grove City) slammed home runs and sophomore righthander Hank Holman threw 6.0 shutout innings as the Bishops blanked Hiram in the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Littick Field.
In the nightcap, sophomore first baseman Zane Vitense (Maple Grove, Minn.) singled in the go-ahead run and Padilla launched another home run to help the Bishops outslug the Terriers and complete the sweep.
The Bishops struck for 3 runs in the first inning of the opener when junior outfielder Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome) drew a one-out walk and Duckworth followed with a homer to center, and Vitense singled home a run later in the inning.
Ohio Wesleyan added 4 more runs in the second, with Duckworth doubling home a run, Padilla yanking an RBI triple down the rightfield line, and Vitense singling in another run. The Bishops scored 5 times in the fourth, with Padilla and Neff crushing 2-run homers during the inning.
Meanwhile, Holman was in command on the mound, allowing a pair of one-out singles in the first but getting out of the inning without any further damage, and then shutting out the Terriers on 1 hit over the next 5 innings. Holman struck out 4 and walked one over his 6.0 innings of work.
Padilla went 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple, and a double. Vitense also was 3-for-4, and Duckworth knocked in 3 runs in the game. Freshman third baseman Michael Malone (Carroll/Bloom-Carroll) went 2-for-3 in his collegiate debut.
Ohio Wesleyan again tallied 3 times in the first inning of the nightcap, getting a sacrifice fly from Padilla and an RBI single from Vitense in the inning.
The visitors rallied with a 2-run double by Tyler Fernandez in the third and added 2 more runs on 3 hits in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead.
Neff singled up the middle to score sophomore outfielder Matt Spencer (Hilliard/Darby) in the fourth, tying the game at 4.
The Bishops strung together 5 straight hits after 2 were out in the fifth, with Padilla doubling and Vitense fighting off a high breaking ball and dumping it into short right center to score Padilla with the go-ahead run. Spencer followed with a single and stole second before senior catcher Tyler Monaco (Centerville/South Mecklenburg (N.C.)) singled home 2 runs, and after Monaco moved to second on a wild pitch, Malone singled in Monaco for an 8-4 Ohio Wesleyan lead.
Ohio Wesleyan added 4 more runs in the seventh with the help of RBI singles by Malone and Duckworth, and Padilla sent a ball over the fence in right center in the eighth inning.
Malone was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, Padilla and Monaco each went 2-for-4, and Vitense was 2-for-5 with 2 RBI. Senior righthander Jason Monos (Amherst/Steele) was the winning pitcher in relief.
