Senior lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood) and junior righthander Kaelyn Rodriguez (South El Monte, Calif.) combined on a 6-hitter to lead Ohio Wesleyan past Otterbein in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at Margaret Sagan Field.
In the opener, senior shortstop Rylee Anspach (Dublin/Coffman) doubled home a run to bring the Bishops within 8-7, but the Cardinals held on for the win.
Otterbein took an early lead in the nightcap on a walk to Chloe Clark, a double by Rachel Miller, and an infield out by Emma Calkins, but the Bishops got the run back on Anspach's RBI single in the bottom of the third.
The Bishops took the lead in the fourth when junior second baseman McKenna Tuttle (Richmond, Ky./Model Laboratory School) singled and freshman outfielder Rylea Gist (Delaware/Hayes) followed with a double. Senior catcher Sara Bias (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic) sent a fly ball to right, scoring Tuttle, and Gist scored when Cardinal shortstop Isa Lewis threw wildly to third base.
The Cardinals closed to within 3-2 in the sixth on an RBI double by Maggie McVicker, but Ohio Wesleyan answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning on run-scoring singles by junior outfielder Avery Panozzo (Denver, Colo./Mullen) and Anspach.
Freshman outfielder Chameron Vanden Eynden (Goshen) was 4-for-4, tying the Bishop single-game record for hits. Senior third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark) went 3-for-4 and Anspach was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.
Chittum worked the first 6.0 innings, scattering 5 hits and striking out 3 while walking 3. Rodriguez pitched the seventh inning to record a save.
In the opener, Panozzo singled home a run in the first for a 1-0 Bishop lead, but the Cardinals got 3 hits and took advantage of 3 Ohio Wesleyan miscues to push across 4 runs in the second, then added 2 more runs in the third.
Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 6-5 with a 3-run fourth, highlighted by a Vanden Eynden RBI single and a Panozzo sacrifice fly, but a pair of Bishop errors in the fifth helped the Cardinals extend the lead to 8-5.
Senior outfielder Rylie Moore (Noblesville, Ind.) launched a solo homer in the fifth, and Anspach doubled in a run in the sixth to make it 8-7 and put the tying run in scoring position, but Cardinal pitcher Riley Hamm got out of the inning without any further damage.
Tuttle went 4-for-4, tying the Bishop single-game record for hits. Vanden Eynden was 3-for-4 and Back and Anspach each went 2-for-4.
Panozzo also rewrote the Ohio Wesleyan record book by recording 6 putouts in the contest, breaking the mark of 5 putouts by an outfielder set by Kristin Kovach at Muskingum on March 20, 2007, and equaled by Lilly Gresh against Heidelberg on April 21, 2015.
Sophomore righthander Makenna Knisley (Washington Court House/Washington) was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops.
