Kenyon 13, Ohio Wesleyan 12
Freshman attacker Wade Beckstrom (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) scored to give Ohio Wesleyan a 12-10 lead with 3:36 left in regulation time, but Kenyon tallied the final 3 goals of the game to escape with a win in a North Coast Atlantic Conference tournament semifinal contest on Thursday at Selby Stadium.
The teams first waited out a lightning delay that pushed back the start of the game by more than an hour and a half, then a lighting delay late in the game.
Beckstrom's goal off a feed from senior midfielder Cooper Braet (Columbus/Upper Arlington) put the Bishops up, 12-10, but the Owls won the ensuing face-off, and after a time out, Kenyon's Gavin Gumucio drove from the left side and fired a shot that glanced off junior goalkeeper Nathan George (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) and into the net with 3:04 remaining.
Before the teams could line up for the face-off, the lights went out and when play resumed, the Owls won the face-off but George made a spectacular save on a shot by Mike Kapral from point-blank range. Ohio Wesleyan turned the ball over on the ensuing clear attempt, however, and Jack McCarren picked up the loose ball and fed Kapral for the tying goal with 2:08 to go.
Sophomore midfielder Noah Citek (Long Beach, Calif./St, John Bosco) won the face-off to give Ohio Wesleyan a chance at the go-ahead score, but Kenyon goalkeeper Adam Hall came up with a save on a shot by freshman midfielder Henry Ross (Snoqualmie, Wash./Mount Si) from the right side. After a time out, Rollins Heath made a run from the top and scored the game-winner with :10 remaining.
Citek won the ensuing face-off, but Ross' long shot from the right side was off the mark.
Ohio Wesleyan had broken a 4-4 tie by closing the first half with scores from junior midfielder Brady Hunt (Maineville/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) and junior attacker Spencer Amacher (Blacksburg, Va./Blue Ridge School), then opened the second half with goals by Ross and junior midfielder Joey Wiseman (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) for an 8-4 lead.
The Bishops still led, 10-6, after a goal by Beckstrom and one from sophomore midfielder Garrett Smith (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) during the first minute of the fourth period, but a 4-1 Kenyon run that included back-to-back scores from David Chintala brought the visitors within 11-10 midway through the quarter.
Beckstrom led Ohio Wesleyan with 5 goals, while Amacher finished with 2 goals and an assist. George finished with 15 saves in the Bishop crease.
Beckstrom and senior midfielder Ben Buroker (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown School) represented the Bishops on the All-NCAC tournament team.
