Ohio Wesleyan 8, Kenyon 2
Senior catcher Sara Bias (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic) delivered a 2-run single to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay and sophomore righthander Makenna Knisley (Washington Court House/Washington) fired a 5-hitter as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Kenyon in the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday in Gambier.
In the nightcap, junior first baseman Sophie Leohner (Columbus/Upper Arlington) plated the go-ahead run and senior lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood) tossed a 6-hitter as the Bishops completed the sweep.
Kenyon took an early lead in the opener on Brooke Avila's run-scoring double in the first inning, but the Bishops answered in the top of the second, opening the inning with walks to senior second baseman Sophia Cegledy (Pataskala/Bishop Hartley) and senior shortstop Rylee Anspach (Dublin/Coffman) before a walk to senior outfielder Rylie Moore (Noblesville, Ind.) filled the sacks. Bias followed with a single to right center to score Cegledy and Anspach and Moore came home on a passed ball for a 3-1 Ohio Wesleyan lead.
The Bishops added 2 runs in the fifth on Cegledy's RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Leohner, then struck for 5 runs in the sixth with the help of a 2-run single by junior outfielder Avery Panozzo (Denver, Colo./Mullen) and a 2-run double by Knisley.
Cegledy was 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored, and freshman outfielder Chameron Vanden Eynden (Goshen) went 2-for-4. Knisley scattered 5 hits, striking out 3 and walking 2, in working the complete game.
The Owls again took a first-inning lead in the nightcap, but Ohio Wesleyan evened the game in the third on a bases-loaded walk to Anspach and took the lead when Leohner followed with a sacrifice fly.
Ohio Wesleyan scored 2 more runs in the fifth, highlighted by an RBI single from junior shortstop McKenna Tuttle (Richmond, Ky./Model Laboratory School), and added 4 runs in the seventh as Leohner and Moore singled in runs.
Leohner went 3-for-3 and Vanden Eynden, Moore, and Tuttle each went 2-for-4. Chittum allowed 6 hits and struck out 4 without walking a batter.
