Field Hockey Opens With Win over Westfield State

Junior midfielder Olivia Danley (Del Rio, Texas/Independence (Va.)) tallied twice to help Ohio Wesleyan on its way to a win over Westfield State in the first round of the Caryl Newhof Classic, hosted by Smith College on Friday in Northampton, Mass.

Ohio Wesleyan advances to the championship game to face host Smith, a 6-0 winner over Nichols in Friday's other contest.  The title tilt is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Danley put the Bishops on the scoreboard in the sixth minute, with junior midfielder Alyssa Markell (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) credited with an assist on the play.

Sophomore forward Brogan Heilig (Monroeville, N.J./Saint Joseph Academy) and sophomore forward Mattison Hyland (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) followed with scores as Ohio Wesleyan built a 3-0 lead after the first quarter.

Senior forward Colleen McMenamin (Chester, N.J./West Morris Regional) and Danley added goals to help the Bishops take a 5-0 lead at the half, and Markell and freshman Mary Powers (Centreville, Va./Chantilly) contributed third-quarter goals to increase the margin to 7-0.

The Owls averted a shutout when Annalise Lopes scored with 2:01 remaining in regulation time.  Prior to that play, the Bishops had not allowed a shot in the contest.

Ohio Wesleyan finished with a 28-1 edge in shots. 
Senior Meg McCarthy (Trumbull, Conn.) played the first half in the Bishop goal and senior Brynn Schlesinger (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) was in the cage for the second half.
