Wright's OT Goal Gives Bishops Caryl Newhof Classic Crown

Junior forward Emma Wright (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) scored in overtime to lift Ohio Wesleyan over Smith in the championship game of the Caryl Newhof Classic, hosted by Smith College on Saturday in Northampton, Mass.

Wright put the Bishops on the scoreboard in the opening minute of the second quarter, but the Pioneers responded with a pair of goals by Annika Peterson less than a minute apart to take a 2-1 lead.

Ohio Wesleyan countered with a pair of scores, evening the game on a goal by senior forward Colleen McMenamin (Chester, N.J./West Morris Regional) just over a minute after Smith had taken the lead, and then getting a goal by junior midfielder Olivia Danley (Del Rio, Texas/Independence (Va.)) with :04 remaining in the half to take a 3-2 lead at the intermission.

Peterson scored midway through the fourth quarter to knot the game at 3.

Wright rang up the game-winner just under 2 minutes into overtime, moving the Bishops to 2-0 on the season.


Ohio Wesleyan outshot Smith, 16-11. 
Senior Meg McCarthy (Trumbull, Conn.) went the distance in the Bishop goal, finishing with 5 saves.

Junior midfielder Alyssa Markell (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.  Markell was joined on the all-tournament team by Wright and sophomore midfielder Grace Ammon (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional).
