Junior midfielder Avery Slucher (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy of Louisville) scored what proved to be the deciding goal as Ohio Wesleyan scored twice during the closing minutes of the first quarter on the way to a non-conference win over Rhodes on Saturday in Danville, Ky.
Late in the first quarter, the Bishops earned a penalty corner. Junior midfielder Olivia Danley (Del Rio, Texas/Independence (Va.)) inserted the ball, took a pass from senior defender Zoë Nelson (Frederick, Md./Urbana), and scored with 1:06 left in the period.
Ohio Wesleyan earned another penalty corner in the final seconds of the quarter, and this time it was Slucher who knocked the ball into the Lynx cage, with sophomore midfielder Grace Ammon (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) credited with an assist on the play.
Rhodes closed to within 2-1 on a goal by Sheela Vasan midway through the second quarter, but the Bishops tallied once in the third period and once in the fourth quarter, with junior midfielder Emma Morgeson (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy of Louisville) making it 3-1 early in the third and Ammon wrapping up the scoring with an unassisted goal with just over 3 minutes left in the game.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Rhodes, 13-5. Senior Brynn Schlesinger (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) was in goal during the first half and senior Meg McCarthy (Trumbull, Conn.) made 1 save during the second half.
