Schipfer's Career Best Leads 19th/20th-Ranked Bishops Past Wittenberg

Fifth-year guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) scored 21 points during the first half to help 19th/20th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan build a double-digit lead, then kicked off a 7-0 run to start the fourth quarter as the Bishops pulled away for a win in a battle of North Coast Athletic Conference unbeatens on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Wittenberg had tied the game at 6 on a pair of free throws by Jazmyn Gaines-Burns when Ohio Wesleyan took off on a 15-0 run.  Sophomore guard Nora Johns (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley) knocked down a jumper to start the Bishop run, and Schipfer followed with a pair of free throws before adding a 3-pointer and a jumper from the lane.  A steal and lay-in from s

closed out the 15-0 run and gave Ohio Wesleyan a 21-6 lead with 2:57 to play in the period.

Schipfer added 2 more lay-ins during the quarter, then scored 10 points during the final 6-plus minutes of the second period to help the Bishops to a 39-23 lead at the intermission.  Ohio Wesleyan would lead by as many as 20 points, that coming on a lay-in by fifth-year guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) midway through the third period.

The Tigers rallied later in the quarter, assembling a 9-0 run that included 3-pointers by Karsen Karlblom and Payton Cronen, and the visitors were still within 54-45 after a Riane Burton lay-in during the final minute of the period.

Schipfer scored on the initial possession of the fourth quarter, and Miller followed with a lay-in before Denison buried a 3-pointer for a 62-45 Ohio Wesleyan lead, and the margin would remain at least 12 points throughout the remainder of the contest.

Schipfer finished with a career-high 34 points, tying for ninth place on the Bishop single-game list, and grabbed a team-high 7 rebounds.  Miller added 18 points and led the Bishops with 4 assists, and Denison scored 11 points.
