Hatgas Wins, Five Bishops Place at Baldwin Wallace

Freshman Liam Hatgas (Parma Heights/Holy Name) won his weight class and a total of 5 wrestlers placed for Ohio Wesleyan at the John Summa Invitational, hosted by Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday in Berea.

Baldwin Wallace won the meet with 197 points to 126 for Case Reserve.  Brockport State was third with 115 points, followed by Ohio Northern (92), Washington & Jefferson (76), West Liberty (73½), Alfred State (72), St. John Fisher (70), Ohio Wesleyan (65), Otterbein (51½), Niagara Community College (48), Waynesburg (26), and Thiel (20½).

Hatgas won the 141-pound bracket.  Hatgas started the day with an 18-5 major decision over Noah Creque of Baldwin Wallace, then pinned Case Reserve's Michael Valerino before recording another major decision, this time by a score of 17-8 over Matt Englehardt of West Liberty in the quarterfinals.  In the semifinals, Hatgas pinned Keegan McMahon of Baldwin Wallace, and in the championship match, Hatgas won an 8-4 decision over Gabe Hansen of Ohio Northern.

Senior Tyler Bodovetz (Steetsboro) also advanced to the championship match in his eight class.  Wrestling at 174, Bodovetz opened in similar fashion, recording an 11-3 major decision over Levi Abbott of West Liberty and pinning Ethan Guevara of Otterbein.  Bodovetz followed with a pin of St. John Fisher's Trevor in the quarterfinals and took a 12-7 decision from Kiam Coleman of Brockport to move into the championship match.  There, Oliver Byerly of West Liberty won a 20-8 major decision.

Senior Geoffrey Kaminski (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) finished fifth in the 197-pound bracket.  Kaminski advanced in the championship bracket with a 7-2 decision over Brent Perry of Alfred State and moved on with a 4-1 decision over Dominic Pagan of Baldwin Wallace in the quarterfinals.  In the semifinals, Kaminski fell to Braydon Vandenberg of St. John Fisher, and in the consolation semifinals, Kaminski fell to Brent Perry of Alfred State, but in a rematch against Pagan in the fifth-place match, Kaminski again prevailed, this time by an 11-5 score.

Senior Des Perry (Garnet Valley, Pa.) and senior Brady Walsh (Dublin/Coffman) each placed in the 184-pound bracket.  Perry lost a 16-0 technical fall to Jessie Orbin of Waynesburg in the first round, but advanced in the consolation bracket with a pin of Thiel's Dwayne Simpkins before losing a 12-0 major decision to Mathew Gummere of Case Reserve to move into the seventh-place match.  Meanwhile, Walsh lost a 22-6 technical fall to Bradyen Roscosky of Washington & Jefferson in the first round, then advanced in the consolation bracket with a pin of Thiel's Trenton Mead before losing a 19-2 technical fall to Charlie Rossner of St. John Fisher to move into the seventh-place match.  With the seventh-place match set between Perry and Walsh, it was Perry who recorded a pin to take seventh place, with Walsh placing eighth.
