Ohio Wesleyan 4, Thomas 2

Sophomore outfielder Rylea Gist (Delaware/Hayes) delivered a 2-run single during a 3-run fourth inning that lifted Ohio Wesleyan to a win over Thomas on Monday in Winter Haven, Fla.

In Monday's first game, freshman second baseman Payton Beard (Cincinnati/St. Ursula) plated the Bishops' only run in a loss to Ithaca.

Thomas had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI double by Maddy Morris, but the Bishops answered in the bottom of the inning when freshman outfielder Sylvie Devore (Dresden/Newark Licking Valley) led off with a single and came in to score on a Terrier error.

Gist's 2-run single scored senior catcher Avery Panozzo (Denver, Colo./Mullen), who had reached on a Thomas error, and Devore, who had walked.  Gist later came in to score on a single by senior infielder Sophie Leohner (Columbus/Upper Arlington).

Devore went 2-for-2 with 2 runs scored, while Gist was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.  Sophomore righthander Shelby Morris (Centerburg) pitched the complete game, scattering 9 hits and striking out 4 while walking one.

In Monday's season opener, the Bombers
took a 4-0 lead in the first with the help of a 3-run homer from Isabella Maynard, then added 8 runs in the second frame, stringing together 9 hits.  Ithaca got back-to-back home runs from Haley Petrucci and Maynard in the third inning and tacked on 2 more runs in the fourth.

Ohio Wesleyan averted the shutout in the top of the fifth when junior righthander Makenna Knisley (Washington Court House/Washington) drew a one-out walk and singles by freshman first baseman Leah Collier (Miamisburg) and senior third baseman McKenna Tuttle (Richmond, Ky./Model Laboratory School) filled the sacks before a walk to Beard forced home Knisley.

Knisley was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
