Ohio Wesleyan 4, Curry 1
Ohio Wesleyan 12, Curry 7
Junior righthander Parker Tomlin (Atlanta, Ga./Westerville (Ohio) Central) and sophomore righthander Nathan Hurley (Delaware/Olentangy Berlin) combined on a 1-hitter as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Curry in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday in Auburndale, Fla.
In the nightcap, junior first baseman Alex Snyder (Massillon/Jackson) drove in 5 runs during a 10-run seventh frame that lifted the Bishops to the win.
Senior second baseman Ryan Duckworth (Hilliard/Bradley) singled in 2 runs in the bottom of the first, and junior catcher Carter Vilevac (Sheffield Village/Brookside) added a run-scoring single in the third for a 3-0 lead in the opener.
The Colonels got that run back on a sacrifice fly by Erik Leonard in the top of the fourth, but Ohio Wesleyan countered with a Vilevac sacrifice fly in the fifth for the 4-1 final.
Junior first baseman Zane Vitense (Maple Grove, Minn.) was 2-for-3 for Ohio Wesleyan. Tomlin allowed 1 hit and struck out 5 during the first 6.0 innings, and Hurley pitched a hitless seventh to collect a save. The combined 1-hitter was the first for the Bishops since March 17, 2019, when Charlie Neel, Chris Punka, and Canyon McWilliams combined on a 1-hitter at Defiance.
The Colonels took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap as Devin Grove lined a 2-run double, and Curry increased the lead to 6-0 in the fifth with the help of RBI doubles from Kyle Doolin and Grove.
Sophomore third baseman Luke Johnson (Cincinnati/Batavia West Clermont) doubled in 2 runs in the sixth to put the Bishops on the scoreboard.
Ohio Wesleyan struck for 10 runs in the top of the seventh. After walks to senior outfielder Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome) and junior outfielder Colton Moone (South Vienna/Northeastern) to open the inning, Snyder went deep to bring the Bishops within 7-5. Singles by Duckworth and junior outfielder Matt Spencer (Hilliard/Darby), sandwiched around Vitense reaching on an error, filled the sacks before sophomore shortstop Michael Malone (Carroll/Bloom-Carroll) walked to force in a run. Senior shortstop Noah Brazytis (Euclid/Cleveland St. Ignatius) singled in the tying run and Stoner followed with a single to put the Bishops ahead, 8-7. Moone singled in a run before Snyder singled in 2 runs, and Duckworth closed out the inning with an RBI single.
Curry loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning, but Vitense came on in relief and induced a game-ending double play.
Snyder was 4-for-5 with 5 RBI. Duckworth went 3-for-4 and Moone was 2-for-4. Senior lefthander Michael Franckhauser (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) picked up the win in relief, and Vitense was credited with a save.
