Fifth-year third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark) drove in a run to give Ohio Wesleyan an early lead, but Kalamazoo went on to defeat Ohio Wesleyan in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader on Friday in Kalamazoo, Mich.

In the nightcap, Kalamazoo's Jordan Cook threw a 5-inning perfect game and Maddie Potts hit a walk-off homer to give the Hornets a sweep of the twinbill.

The Bishops took the lead in the first inning of the opener as senior outfielder Avery Panozzo (Denver, Colo./Mullen) opened the game with a double and scored when Back's pop-fly bunt fell between the circle and the second base bag.  The Bishops would have runners at second and third with nobody out, but Hornet starter Maddy Vrba got out of the inning without any further damage.

The Hornets answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning, collecting 5 hits and 2 walks, and added 4 more runs in the second with the help of Macy Ward's 2-run single.

Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 8-3 in the third as sophomore outfielder Chameron Vanden Eynden (Goshen) and Back scored after a throwing error by Hornet shortstop Ella Neumann, but Kalamazoo got the 2 runs back in the bottom of the inning and scored 6 times in the fourth, highlighted by a 2-run single from Landrie Fridsma and a 2-run double from Emma Newlove.

Sophomore righthander Shelby Morris (Centerburg) singled home a run in the fifth for the 16-4 final.

Back, Vanden Eynden, and Panozzo each went 2-for-3 for Ohio Wesleyan.  Morris was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops.

Kalamazoo raced to a 6-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap, getting a 2-run single from Potts and a 2-run double by Neumann during the inning.

Meanwhile, Cook retired all 15 batters she faced.

Potts singled in a run in the second to make it 7-0 and ended the game by leading off the bottom of the fifth with a home run.

Senior righthander Kaelyn Rodriguez (South El Monte, Calif.) pitched the complete game for Ohio Wesleyan.
