Wooster Sweeps Baseball in NCAC Opener

Junior first baseman Alex Snyder (Massillon/Jackson) doubled in a run to tie the game at 10, but Wooster scored the next 5 runs and went on to a win in the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday in Wooster.

In the nightcap,
junior outfielder Matt Spencer (Hilliard/Darby) singled in 2 runs to bring the Bishops within 4-3, but the Fighting Scots scored the next 9 runs to complete the sweep.

The Bishops trailed, 2-0, in the opener before erupting for 5 runs in the top of the second, highlighted by a 2-run single by senior second baseman Ryan Duckworth (Hilliard/Bradley), but Wooster answered with 6 runs in the bottom of the inning, getting a 2-run singles from Leo Widtmann and Nick Pett, and added 2 more runs in the third with the help of a run-scoring triple by Ryan Kramer.

Duckworth smashed a 2-run homer during Ohio Wesleyan's 4-run fourth, and the Bishops tied the game in the fifth as sophomore shortstop Josh Bercaw (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) led off with a single, moved to second on an infield out, took third on a fly ball, and scored on Snyder's double.

Wooster answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning, taking the lead on Zack Barienbrock's RBI single, added 2 more runs in the sixth with the help of an RBI single by Widtmann.

Ohio Wesleyan rallied in the seventh, loading the bases as Bercaw was hit by a pitch, senior outfielder Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome) beat out a bunt single, and Duckworth singled.  Snyder singled home Bercaw, and junior catcher Carter Vilevac (Sheffield Village/Brookside) plated a run on a fielder's choice, but Wooster reliever Constantine Vernadakis got out of the inning without any further damage.

Duckworth went 5-for-6 and drove in 4 runs for Ohio Wesleyan.  Sophomore lefthander Nate Cory (Donnelsville/New Carlisle Tecumseh) was the losing pitcher in relief.

The Fighting Scots built a 4-0 lead in the nightcap as Luke Rizzo had an RBI single in the second and an RBI double in the fourth.

Ohio Wesleyan came back in the third as sophomore third baseman Luke Johnson (Cincinnati/Batavia West Clermont) was hit by a pitch to open the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice.  After a walk to Bercaw, Stoner singled to left, scoring Johnson, and moved to second as Bercaw was thrown out at third on the play.  The Bishops loaded the bases with a walk to Duckworth and a single by Snyder, and Spencer followed with a single to left, scoring Stoner and Duckworth, with Snyder thrown out at third to end the inning.

Wooster answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning, with Rizzo delivering an RBI single, and Kramer added a sacrifice fly in the sixth.  The Scots ended the game with 5 runs in the bottom of the seventh, with Kramer hitting a 2-run homer to make it 12-3 before Nick Pett followed with a walk-off homer.

Stoner was 3-for-4 for Ohio Wesleyan.  Junior righthander Hank Holman (Twinsburg) was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops
