Alma 9, Ohio Wesleyan 2
Alma 4, Ohio Wesleyan 0

Senior second baseman McKenna Tuttle (Richmond, Ky./Model Laboratory School) and senior outfielder Avery Panozzo (Denver, Colo./Mullen) drove in runs to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 3-2, but Alma pulled away for a win in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday at Margaret Sagan Field.

In the nightcap, sophomore righthander Shelby Morris (Centerburg) and senior righthander Kaelyn Rodriguez (South El Monte, Calif.) threw a combined 3-hitter, but Alma pushed across 4 runs to complete the sweep.

The Fighting Scots scored 3 times before recording their first hit of the game in the bottom of the first inning of the opener, collecting a walk, a hit batsman, a 2-base throwing error, a stolen base, and a pair of infield outs.

Singles by senior first baseman Sophie Leohner (Upper Arlington), Morris, and Tuttle put the Bishops on the scoreboard in the second, and Panozzo's single later in the inning scored Morris to make it 3-2.

Alma added 2 runs in the bottom of the inning when Leohner bobbled what would have been an inning-ending throw at first base, allowing Jordyn Porter and Reneigh Sandmann to score, and the visitors tacked on 3 more in the fourth with the help of an RBI double from Camille Lozmack.

Ohio Wesleyan got runners to second base in the fourth and fifth, and loaded the bases on singles by Morris, freshman outfielder Abbe Wherett (Centreville, Mich.), and freshman shortstop Caity Journey (Nashport/Dresden Tri-Valley) in the sixth, but the runners were stranded.

Morris was 3-for-3 for the Bishops, and was the starting and losing pitcher.

The nightcap was a pitchers' duel between Morris and Rodriguez and Alma's Mikaylyn Kenney, with each team finishing with a 3-hitter.

Alma manufactured a run in the second as Julia Duncan led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice, took third on a fly ball, and scored on Jenna Holzinger's single through the left side.  The Fighting Scots made it 2-0 in the third when Peyton Fether reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, and scored on a throwing error.

The Bishops threatened in the fourth as fifth-year third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark) reached on an error by Fether, moved to second on a sacrifice, and after Leohner was hit by a pitch, took third on a fly ball, with Leohner moving to second on the throw.  One out later, Tuttle worked ahead in the count and then was intentionally walked to fill the bases, but Kenney came back to retire junior infielder Kelsey Shiley (Fostoria/Tiffin Calvert) on strikes to get out of the inning.

Morris was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops.
