16th/18th-Ranked Bishops Down Presidents in NCAA Second Round

Junior guard Mia Guscoff (Canton/Massillon Perry) buried a pair of 3-pointers during an 11-0 second-quarter run that provided 16th-/18th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan some breathing room, and fifth-year point guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) and fifth-year guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) helped the Bishops close out a win over Washington & Jefferson in an NCAA Division III tournament second-round contest on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Ohio Wesleyan advances to face seventh-/10th-ranked Baldwin Wallace in a third-round matchup on Friday at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill.  Baldwin Wallace advanced to the third round with wins over LaRoche (63-53) on Friday and Washington & Lee (75-71) on Saturday.

Fifth-year guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) opened the evening's scoring with a 3-pointer and sophomore post Macy Miller (Marysville/Milford Center Fairbanks) and Schipfer followed with jumpers as the Bishops raced to a 7-0 lead.

The Presidents closed to within 11-10 on a 3-pointer by Katie Kovalchick, and the visitors were still within 26-21 after Riley DeRubbo's lay-in a minute into the second quarter.

Guscoff then knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, Denison followed with a trifecta, and Schipfer hit a jumper from the lane to extend the margin to 37-21 midway through the period.  Ohio Wesleyan led by a 43-27 count at the half, and the Bishops still led, 67-52, after Miller's fast-break lay-in with 4:03 left in regulation time.

W&J rallied with 9 straight points, getting a pair of lay-ins from Meghan Dryburgh, 3 free throws from Kovalchick, and a pair of free throws by Bryn Bezjak to narrow the gap to 67-61 with 1:51 to play.

Schipfer ended that run with a jumper at the 1:30 mark, and the Bishops put the game away at the free throw line, with Homan sinking 7 in a row before missing her eighth attempt during the final minute and Schipfer adding 2 more free throws.

Schipfer led the Bishops with 33 points, finishing one short of her career best, and shared the team lead with 4 assists.  Homan scored 18 points and shared the team lead with 4 assists.  Miller finished with 15 points, a team-high 12 rebounds, and shared the team lead with 4 assists.
