Baseball Rallies Past North Central

Junior outfielder Colton Moone (South Vienna/Northeastern) singled home the go-ahead run during a 5-run eighth inning that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and the Bishops went on to a win over North Central on Sunday in Marietta, Ohio.

North Central's A.J. Kutcher tripled home 2 runs and scored on an infield out by John Michael Scumaci as the Cardinals took a 5-1 lead in the fourth, but senior second baseman Ryan Duckworth (Hilliard/Bradley) smashed a 2-run homer in the fifth and junior catcher Carter Vilevac (Sheffield Village/Brookside) singled home 2 runs in the seventh as the Bishops evened the score.

The Cardinals retook the lead when Justin Lang scored on a double-play grounder in the bottom of the sixth.

Senior outfielder Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome) led off the eighth with a single and scored on a triple by junior first baseman Zane Vitense (Maple Grove, Minn.) to knot the game at 6.  Moone followed with a single up the middle to score Vitense with the go-ahead run.  After an intentional walk to Duckworth and a Vilevac sacrifice moved the runners to second and third, the Bishops plated runs on a single by junior outfielder Matt Spencer (Hillard/Darby), a single by sophomore third baseman Luke Johnson (Cincinnati/Batavia West Clermont), and a sacrifice fly by sophomore shortstop Michael Malone (Carroll/Bloom-Carroll).

North Central opened the eighth with a triple from Peyton Burgh and a double by Henry Saul, but senior righthander Joe Liss (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) got out of the inning without any further damage, and both teams scored a run in the ninth for the 11-8 final.

Stoner and Duckworth each went 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored, with Duckworth also driving in 3 runs.  Vitense was 3-for-6 and Vilevac plated 2 runs.  Liss worked the final 4.0 innings. allowing 5 hits and striking out 4 while walking none, to record the win.
