Senior first baseman Sophie Leohner (Upper Arlington) singled home a run to even the game at 1-1, but Denison went on to win the nightcap of a doubleheader in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Tuesday in Granville.

In the opener, Denison's Brooke Surbaugh threw a 2-hit shutout to give the Big Red the win.

Denison had taken a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the nightcap as Brianna Gonzalez led off with a double, stole third, and scored on a fielding error.

The Bishops answered in the top of the fourth when fifth-year third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark) led off with a double, moved to third on a single by senior catcher Avery Panozzo (Denver, Colo./Mullen), and scored on Leohner's single.

The Big Red retook the lead in the fifth when, with 2 down, Carley Melton sent a fly ball to shallow right center that fell, then stole second, and scored on a single by Madilyn Moffitt.  Denison added some insurance in the sixth on a 3-run homer by Emily Orsini.

Sophomore outfielder Chameron Vanden Eynden (Goshen) was 2-for-3 for Ohio Wesleyan.  Senior righthander Kaelyn Rodriguez (South El Monte, Calif.) pitched the complete game for the Bishops.

The opener saw the Big Red collect 8 hits on the way to scoring 8 runs in the second inning, with Surbaugh helping her own cause with a 2-run single.  Denison added 4 runs on the third, highlighted by a 3-run homer off the bat of Jacqui Abogado.

Sophomore righthander Shelby Morris (Centerburg) was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops.
