Fifth-year third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark) drove in a run to put Ohio Wesleyan on the scoreboard, but DePauw went on to win the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday at Margaret Sagan Field.

In the nightcap, Back scored a run to bring the Bishops within 2-1 in the first inning, but the Tigers went on to complete the sweep.

DePauw struck for 2 runs in the top of the first inning of the opener, getting an RBI double from Katie Mathies and a run-scoring single from Alex Romero-Salas. 

Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the bottom of the inning with a 2-out single by senior catcher Avery Panozzo (Denver, Colo./Mullen) and a double by sophomore outfielder Rylea Gist (Delaware/Hayes), but Romero-Salas retired senior first baseman Sophie Leohner (Upper Arlington) on strikes to get out of the inning unscathed.

The Tigers collected 5 hits in the second, pushing across runs on singles by Riley Heim and Mathies.

Freshman shortstop Caity Journey (Nashport/Dresden Tri-Valley) belted a 1-out double in the fifth, and after a sacrifice by sophomore outfielder Chameron Vanden Eynden (Goshen), Back singled through the left side to bring the Bishops within 4-1.

Ohio Wesleyan got 2-ou
t singles from Journey and Vanden Eynden in the bottom of the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate in Back, but Romero-Salas induced a game-ending ground out.

Journey was 2-for-3 in the game.  Senior righthander Kaelyn Rodriguez (South El Monte, Calif.) pitched the compete game for Ohio Wesleyan.

The Tigers opened the second game with hits from their first 3 batters, with Heim doubling in a run and later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Kendal Hynes to take a 2-0 lead.

Ohio Wesleyan got one back in the bottom of the inning as Back led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on a bunt single by Vanden Eynden, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Panozzo.

Mathies doubled in a run in the fourth and the Tigers added a run on the front end of a first-and-third play later in the inning, and the visitors added 4 more runs in the fifth, highlighted by a 2-run single from Ella Kuenster.

Vanden Eynden and Journey each went 2-for-3 for the Bishops.  Rodriguez was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan
