Wilmington Rallies Past Baseball

Senior second baseman Ryan Duckworth (Hilliard/Bradley) drove in a run to give Ohio Wesleyan a 4-3 lead, but Wilmington rallied for a non-conference win on Thursday at Littick Field.

Duckworth delivered a 2-run single in the bottom of the first inning to put the Bishops ahead, 2-1, but the Quakers got an RBI single from Caleb Fugate to tie the game in the second and a run-scoring double by J.C. Calhoun to go up, 3-2, in the top of the sixth.

Junior first baseman Alex Snyder (Massillon/Jackson) greeted Quaker reliever Hayden Wibbeler with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the sixth, and sophomore third baseman Luke Johnson (Cincinnati/Batavia West Clermont) followed with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on Duckworth's single for a 4-3 Bishop lead.

Wilmington scored 4 times in the top of the seventh, with J.P. Donelan drawing a bases-loaded walk before Fugate followed with a 2-run single and J.C. Calhoun added an RBI single to put the visitors ahead, 7-4.

The Bishops rallied in the bottom of the inning with run-scoring doubles by Malone and Snyder to pull within 7-6.

Duckworth drew a one-out walk and stole second with one out in the eighth to put the tying run on second base but was stranded there, and in the bottom of the ninth, 2-out singles by s
enior outfielder Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome) and Snyder put the winning run on base, but Quaker reliever Donelan retired Johnson on strikes to end the game.

Snyder was 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and Duckworth plated 3 runs.  Freshman righthander Ben Bayer (Belbrook) was the losing pitcher in relief.
