Sophomore righthander Shelby Morris (Centerburg) knocked in what proved to be the deciding run as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Kenyon in the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Margaret Sagan Field.

In the nightcap, the Owls scored 5 times in the first inning and held off a Bishop comeback to salvage a split.

Senior first baseman Sophie Leohner (Upper Arlington)
delivered a 2-run single in the first inning of the opener, senior catcher Avery Panozzo (Denver, Colo./Mullen) drove in a run with a bases-loaded ground out in the second, and Morris plated a run with a squeeze bunt in the third to make it 4-0.

Kenyon closed to within 4-3 in the sixth, highlighted by a run-scoring double by Maeve McLaughlin, but the Bishops answered with 5 runs in the bottom of the inning, stringing together 5 hits and taking advantage of a pair of Kenyon errors during the inning.

Fifth-year third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark), sophomore outfielder Chameron Vanden Eynden (Goshen), and freshman shortstop Caity Journey (Nashport/Dresden Tri-Valley) each went 2-for-3 for the Bishops.  Senior righthander Kaelyn Rodriguez (South El Monte, Calif.) pitched the complete game, scattering 6 hits, to record the win.

McLaughlin had a 2-run single and Sophia Lynch added a 2-run double during Kenyon's 5-run first inning in the nightcap.

The Bishops scored unearned runs in the first and fourth frames, then Vanden Eynden and Panozzo knocked in runs in the sixth to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 5-4.

Kenyon added 3 insurance runs in the top of the seventh to stretch the lead to 8-4, but Ohio Wesleyan rallied in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases on singles by Journey and freshman outfielder Sylvie Devore (Dresden/Newark Licking Valley) and a walk to Back that brought the tying run to the plate, but Kenyon reliever Jillian Messinger got out of the inning to end the game.

Journey was 4-for-4 for Ohio Wesleyan, with the 4 hits tying the Bishop single-game record.  Morris was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops.
