Denison 7, Ohio Wesleyan 1
Denison at Ohio Wesleyan

Sophomore lefthander Nate Cory (Donnelsville/New Carlisle Tecumseh) and Denison's Will Rettig locked up in a pitchers' duel for 5-plus innings, but the fifth-ranked Big Red broke the scoreless deadlock and went on to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday at Littick Field.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed because of rain.  The game has been rescheduled for 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Denison University in Granville.

Cory blanked the Big Red on 4 hits through the first 5.0 innings, striking out 3.  Cory surrendered singles to Alex Vasquez and Eron Vega to open the third, and a sacrifice moved the runners to second and third with one out, but Cory got Eric Colaco to hit into an inning-ending double play.

Meanwhile, Rettig shut out the Bishops on 2 hits through the first 5.0 innings, fanning 6.  Ohio Wesleyan loaded the bases in the second on walks to junior outfielder Matt Spencer (Hilliard/Darby) and junior first baseman Zane Vitense (Maple Grove, Minn.) and a bunt single by junior outfielder Jack Bates (Westerville/South), but Rettig retired sophomore shortstop Josh Bercaw (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) on an infield out to get out of the inning.

Denison took the lead in the sixth when Cade Nowik launched a solo homer.  The Big Red added a run later in the inning on Jack Steel's run-scoring double, and Nowik singled in 2 runs during Denison's 3-run seventh.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the seventh, opening the inning with singles by Vitense and junior outfielder Colton Moone (South Vienna/Northeastern) and filling the sacks with nobody out when Bates was hit by a pitch.  Rettig struck out sophomore outfielder Myles Foy (Downers Grove, Ill./Timothy Christian) for the first out, and after Michael Gray came on in relief for Denison, Big Red catcher Jack Lutte picked Vitense off third base for the second out.  Senior outfielder Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome) singled home Moone, but Gray was able to get out of the inning without any further damage.

The Bishops loaded the bases in the eighth with one out, sandwiching singles by Snyder and Vitense around Spencer getting hit by a pitch, but Gray recorded a pair of strikeouts to leave the bases full.

Vitense was 2-for-3 for Ohio Wesleyan.  Cory, who allowed 6 hits and 2 runs in 5.2 innings, was charged with the loss
