20th-Ranked Bishops Advance to NCAC Tournament Title Tilt

Sophomore midfielder Henry Ross (Snoqualmie, Wash./Mount Si) scored the tying and winning goals as 20th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan closed the game with a 4-0 run to defeat Oberlin in a North Coast Athletic Conference tournament semifinal matchup on Wednesday at Selby Stadium.

Ohio Wesleyan will host 19th-ranked Denison in the NCAC tournament championship game at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Selby Stadium.  Denison advanced to the championship game with a 19-7 win over Wooster on Wednesday.

With the score tied at 7, Oberlin got a goal from Cooper Zancosky and a man-up score by Jacob Starcke less than a minute later to close out the third-quarter scoring.  Starcke then scored less than a minute into the fourth period to give the Yeomen a 10-7 lead.

Senior midfielder Joey Wiseman (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) scored off a feed from sophomore attacker Wade Beckstrom (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) to make it 10-8 with 12:06 left in regulation time, and Beckstrom followed with a goal to bring the Bishops within 10-9.

Ross got the equalizer off a pass from junior attacker Will Siegenthaler (Elmhurst, Ill./York) with 2:14 remaining.

Oberlin won the ensuing face-off, but senior attacker Carson Geier (Milford) caused a turnover and picked up the ground ball to give possession back to the Bishops.  Beckstrom whistled a shot wide of the goal with :56 left in regulation time, but Ross got the next shot and found the back of the net to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead with :46 to play.

The Yeomen won the ensuing face-off and called timeout with :21 left, but a shot by Christian Tacogue was wide of the goal.  Oberlin called timeout with :09 remaining to set up a final play, and Starcke had a good look at the goal, but senior Nathan George (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) made the save to protect the lead.

Ohio Wesleyan opened the game with goals from Geier and Ross, but the visitors got on the scoreboard with a ground ball pickup and transition goal by Cooper Rand.  After Nicholas Cuda scored to even the game at 2, the teams traded goals 5 times to leave the game knotted at 7 midway through the third quarter.

Ross led the Bishops with 4 goals and an assist.  Beckstrom added 2 goals and 2 assists.  George finished with 14 saves, including 4 during the fourth quarter.

Junior midfielder Noah Citek (Long Beach, Calif./St. John Bosco) recorded 6 face-off wins, moving his career total to 588 to break the career record (2007-) set by Sam Gioseffi from 2012-15.
