Ohio Wesleyan University will recognize its 1970-71 wrestling team as part of the University's annual Team of Distinction ceremony on Saturday, September 20, during Homecoming & Family Weekend.

The Team of Distinction was created to recognize individual teams that have distinguished themselves and made extraordinary contributions to OWU athletics.

The 1970-71 wrestling team compiled a 13-0 record in dual meets under head coach Ray Leech '49.  The Bishops racked up a 12-0 record against Ohio Athletic Conference opponents, including consecutive wins of 19-14 over Baldwin Wallace, the previous season's OAC runner-up, and 20-11 at defending conference champion Wittenberg.  Ohio Wesleyan also won the Great Lakes Colleges Association tournament, placing 7 wrestlers, including 2 individual champions, 3 runners-up, and 2 third-place finishers, on the way to the team title.

In the OAC championship meet, Peter Earle '72 and Scott Votey '72 won conference titles at 118 and 142 pounds respectively.  Rick Thiel '74 finished as conference runner-up at 167, and Joe Coy '73 and Ralph Sammis '72 were third-place finishers at 190 and 150 pounds respectively.  Ohio Wesleyan finished in second place in the team standings with 68 points to 73 for Baldwin Wallace.

Earle and Votey then went on to represent Ohio Wesleyan at the NCAA College Division championship meet at Fargo, N.D., becoming the first Bishop grapplers on record to compete in an NCAA championship meet.
